It was dark. She could see nothing except black. The air was cold, damp, and empty. A woman appeared suddenly, surrounded by a white light. She was tall, with blonde hair, blue eyes, and fair skin. She looked vaguely familiar. She turned around and smiled at Gabrielle.
"My, you've grown," she said.
Gabrielle was reluctant to speak. She cocked her head in confusion at the woman's sudden appearance. The woman's smile morphed quickly into a frown and her eyes shimmered sadly.
"You don't remember me?" she asked, her voice soft, as if far away, but it echoed in the dark space as well. Gabrielle shook her head, feeling a little sad. She felt like she should remember who this woman was and she searched her mind for an answer; she found none. They stared at each other for a little longer before the woman turned back around, heading out into the darkness. Gabrielle ran after her.
"Wait!" she yelled, her voice echoing off invisible walls. It appeared that the woman could not hear her...or she just wasn't listening. Gabrielle continued to run, but the woman continued to become farther away.
"Wait!" she called again. She felt a tug at her body and she stopped, thinking it was a cramp. Instead, she watched as something pulled away from her, a wisp, a spirit? She watched as it formed into something, a body, a person. A girl. She was younger now, how young she couldn't tell. Her smaller self ran up to the woman, as if she knew her. The woman smiled and picked the girl up, hugging her to her chest. Gabrielle felt the warmth of the woman's body flood through her. There was love in that hug from both sides. This woman was important. But why?
"Ah, I knew you remembered. Deep down, you do," the woman said to the little girl. She gave the girl a kiss on the cheek and set her back down on the ground. The girl smiled, and then she flickered and faded away. When the woman stood, she turned to Gabrielle one last time with the same frown she'd worn before and the same shimmering eyes.
"I've missed you so much," was all she said before she walked away. Gabrielle decided to give one last chase before giving up. Now she remembered! She'd seen this woman plenty of times before…
Yes! Yes! She remembered…!
She held her hand out to the woman. The light surrounding the woman lingered for a while, but then a gunshot rang out and the light flickered and evanesced.
"Mom!"
"My, you've grown," she said.
